Brandon Rios vs Mike Alvarado Latest Updates

Light Welterweight Championship Title
October 13, 2012 - Home Depot Center in Carson, California

Boxing fans have clamored for months to see heavy-hitting fighters Mike Alvarado and Brandon Rios go against each other. Finally fans will get what they want.

Brandon Rios lost the interim WBA lightweight title on the scales by coming in overweight again but won the fight against Cuban Richard Abril (17-3-1, 8 KOs) by 12-round split decision on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada. The judges scores were 116-112 and 115-113 for Rios and 117-111 for Abril. It was a gift decision for Rios who did not deserve to win. Abril was robbed. He schooled Rios and controlled the fight every round except round three.

Denver's Alvarado (33-0, 23 knockouts) will travel to face Rios (30-0-1, 22 KOs) in a junior welterweight bout outdoors at the Home Depot Center near Los Angeles on Oct. 13. The fight's promoter confirmed Tuesday the fight is scheduled, with "paperwork being drawn up."

"It should be a Gatti-Ward type fight, where neither guy takes a backstep," Moretti said, comparing them to the reknowned Arturo Gatti vs. Micky Ward trilogy in 2002-03.

The mood between the fighters is of impersonal animosity. They want to hurt each other not because of bad blood, but because it is both their nature and their job. It all began when Bam Bam famously declared he wanted “the toughest motherf***er at 140” after his body cruelly squeezed him out of the lightweight division. After signing up for the fight, Alvarado raised the stakes by saying he feels he’ll be able to stop the Mexican-American inside of seven rounds. But Brandon remained cool against this provocation, calling Alvarado’s bluff: “That’s great that he thinks that he’s going to stop me within seven rounds. It’s great that he thinks I’m easy. I’m glad that he feels that way,” he declared to Ring Magazine recently.

"It should be a Gatti-Ward type fight, where neither guy takes a backstep," Moretti said, comparing them to the reknowned Arturo Gatti vs. Micky Ward trilogy in 2002-03.
